My girl is 3 1/2, she really likes to play... some areas are hard for her if I am not next to her coaching her a little but she can play on her own for a long time and have fun. She feels great and exclaims when she earn badges - which give you points to use for buying dress up clothes, collectibles, and themes for the game. Kinda cool for her to feel like she earned something and can pick her prize. Game is pretty easy to navigate and has shortcuts for people that don't want to play the "story" but just want to do the challenges. There are items to find and collect and then deliver to other characters. There is a game to play for each of the main characters so that is fun for kids with a favorite character. Great variety of things to do and games to play. The game has a bit of an ability to adjust to your learning level and adjust to your learning accomplishments. Good game. I am happy with it. It is the only cartridge we have. We have only leaplets that are downloaded besides Kai-Lan and it is much more complex and worth the expense comparatively. However, leaplets would be disappointing at the price of a cartridge.
We have a clickstart and have Kai-Lan for that, I was a little concerned that the game would be very similar but it is not at all. It is very different from the clickstart activities (I've read complaints that clickstart games and leapster are too similar so kids tire of them quickly.) Not the case with Kai-lan for explorer vs clickstart, Very Different
