(More customer reviews)After spending literally all day trying to tame this doll's unruly hair for my daughter, I decided it was time to write a review for other prospective buyers. This doll comes with her hair braided, but is also pictured in the catalog with her hair loose, and the site recommends that you purchase the special American Girl hairbrush (that we did purchase), which seems to support the idea that this doll's hair can be taken down and brushed.
Within an hour of receiving the doll as a gift, my daughter wanted to take its hair down and brush it. Well, it seemed to be set with some sort of fixative -- doll hairspray, if you will -- and my daughter could barely get the brush through it and with each gentle attempt, MANY strands of hair would come out. We followed all the directions for detangling - misting with cool water and gently working the special brush through the hair -- but as soon as one tangle was worked out, ten more would replace it. Every time my daughter played with the doll, it would become a battle against the tangles and the hair just kept getting more and more tangled and matted until my daughter shoved the doll to the back of the closet and never touches her.
Also, clearly the hair was meant to be left in the braid because one side is longer than the other, the underneath strands are much shorter than the outer layer, and if her hair is allowed to part while hanging loose, you can see a big 'bald' spot at the crown. Horrible looking! Unfortunately, just changing the doll's clothes was enough to mess up the smooth braid even BEFORE we took the hair down, so it's virtually impossible to play with the doll and keep it looking nice.
For what these dolls cost, I expected a better quality doll wig (we have other dolls that have much more manageable hair.) The quality of the doll's hair is comparable to that of the little $20 American Girl knock offs that you can get elsewhere (Target and ToysRUs had versions.) The clothes and accessories are very nice and well-made, so if you want a collector doll to sit on a shelf and never touch, this doll is fine for that, but as a play doll? Terrible!
