(More customer reviews)I hadn't heard of these Teacup Piggies until earlier this week when a commercial was on, and my daughter pointed out that she had to have one. As it turned out, she had more than enough money in her piggy bank for one, so she picked out Snowflake here at the toy store. I won't deny it- these are some of the cutest toys I've seen in a while, probably since the Furby era. At the same time, the idea's just so weird: little pigs that sit in teacups...and you dress them up? Still, my daughter loves this thing, and I can see it being one of the hotter toys this year, easily becoming this year's Zhu Zhu Pet/Tickle Me Elmo/Furby/Robosapien.
The Teacup Piggy is just a cute, plastic pig with fuzzy 'skin'. You can move the head and legs around a little bit, but they're pretty stiff. There's a switch on the bottom that goes from demo, off and on. Snowflake says a bunch of different things when you move her around or press her nose, and even when you don't do anything, which could be a problem for parents with little patience, and for those who hate buying batteries all the time. Snowflake's a cheerleader pig (oh the irony...), and says some cheerleader-y things here and there. She even says 'LOL'. She comes with a little bow, sunglasses and the teacup to set her in, though she stands up perfectly without it. Accessory packs are sold separately, but add some more play value to the toy, a lot like the accessory packs for Zhu Zhu Pets.
So why the 3 and 4 stars in the ratings? First, the durability. I was very, very surprised when I picked Snowflake up and felt how thin the plastic is. If anyone accidentally steps on one of these pigs, they're toast. Fortunately, the price isn't anywhere near as much as it could've been for something like this, so you won't feel like it's a huge blow to your wallet when/if you have to get a replacement. The fuzzy coat on the pig is also pretty cheap, and I noticed that Snowflake's right ear was missing a bit on the tip right out of the package. There are also some weird indentations around the chin that don't look like anything the plastic bubble caused. It's also worth mentioning that the fuzzy skin gets dirty easily since she's a lighter color. Bits of fuzz from clothing and carpet will go straight to poor Snowflake in no time. Also, the person who they got for Snowflake's voice sounds kind of bored. I would've went with a more enthusiastic person to do the voice, especially for a cheerleader character, but it's something I doubt any kids will care about when playing with the toy. There's not much in the way of education other than your kid learning a little song.
But overall, I really dig these pigs. My daughter's almost 4 and picked this over several other things that she's really into or wanted for a longer time, and she even had Snowflake on her pillow when she was sleeping. If you or your kids are interested in these Teacup Piggies at all, you might want to hurry and get one or two now before it gets harder to find them in the next 2 months. But at the same time, I see on the company's site that they already have 2 more waves on the way, so it looks like there'll be plenty to choose from.
